After the seeming debacle of sending someone to ASP, while knowing deep in my heart that he would reject it out of hand, it really began to make me wonder. What if sentience really is a dead-end? What if Fermi's Paradox is just the first evidence of such? What if Nature can't find a way out of the animal's (or early life forms, if you prefer) predicament/trap? What if the whole idea of life is a bust, a dead end? What if sentience cannot learn to get out of its own way?
To me, that would suck. More importantly, it wouldn't make sense. For certain, I figured it out. That kinda puts a kibosh on the whole idea that sentience cannot figure out what is wrong.
At worst, it seems that it can't be more than a matter of timing. There is so much pressure to bare the lie right now, from other sources than me, that it all seems to be leading in the same direction. Sentient awakening. It seems like a sentient race will reach a point of no return, sooner or later, if they do not remove the blinders.
My last big worry becomes insubstantial. The slightly less big worry is whether the human race can pull it off. That remains to be seen.
