I consider 'keeping up appearances' to be one of the clearer indications of our prehuman state. It emphasises the point that we are attempting to act like we are Human rather than being Human. It also emphasises that we know what it means to be Human. Do I need to explain that further or does everyone get it? I am not saying a person's appearance is not important but many (most? all?) continue to attempt to appear to others as something that they are not. Maybe listen to What's The Matter Here by 10,000 Maniacs. Dorian Grey is another good analogy.
