Innocence is nothing more than nothing left to hide for a sentient race.
Innocence is ruined when the prehuman reaches puberty and discovers they are not wholly human (in the case of the male) or realize they are not living exclusively amidst humans (the female).
It is called 'maturing' and it's not even mentioned with tongue in cheek.
We sense the heights (i.e. love & noble characteristics) to which we deserve to ascend as a sentient race and, yet, have scrabbled for three millennia to attain them, never even getting close.
The prehuman perspective is that innocence must be sacrificed to the world at large as one reaches puberty??!? The old saws, "One must abandon their innocence as one matures" (maturity coincides with puberty) and "Nose to the grindstone" say it all. Don't ever raise your head from the grindstone for fear of what you may eventually realize. That is the end of innocence. Never is the tie between puberty and loss of innocence mentioned. The secret that is no secret remains in hiding.
Once Humanity gains its loving nature, that is its right as a sentiently aware race, everyone will maintain their innocence under almost any set of circumstances or duress. A loving, innocent nature is almost impossible to overturn for a wholly sentient being amidst a wholly sentient race because self-respect is not compromised. Self-respect will not allow innocence, the essence of being Human, to be overturned. Maybe two other terms are a better, more informative, more accurate description of innocence. Honesty and clarity. Only the loss of the initiating component of love destabilizes innocence.
I think this gets close to why this is all so hard to accept for the prehuman. They are convinced that dishonesty and delusions are an unalterable part of life.
It will start as armoured, or guarded, innocence during the transformation and become fulfilled innocence for the race as the last remnants of the prehuman fade away.
Unchallenged innocence will be a tremendous change that I will leave for a wholly sane, sentient Human race to detail in retrospect.
Maybe innocence should be classified along with clarity and self-respect as the defining characteristics of a fulfilled sentient race.
I begin to detect just how momentous the change we will experience is. It will be massive. Fusion.
